Collagenase Activity of Intact Corneal Epithelium in Peripheral Alkali Burns

Abstract

Collagenase was produced from intact epithelium of nonulcerated rabbit corneas beginning 9 to 15 hours after an alkali burn of the perilimbal sclera. At the same time, glycogen loss from these cells generally paralleled the degree of aqueous glucose depression. Aqueous humor from alkali burned eyes failed to have either facilitative or inhibitory effects on collagenase production in vitro. Persistently low aqueous pH starting 20 minutes after peripheral alkali burning is attributed to increased aqueous lactate.
