Abstract

A detailed analysis has been carried out of the urinary purines in a patient with the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome and a control individual. Separation, quantitation, and identification of the purines employed three different column chromatographic methods and ultraviolet spectrophotometry. The patient differed from the control particularly in the excretion of the oxypurines and of AIC and its riboside. The excretion of oxypurines, hypoxanthine and xanthine was about six times higher in the patient. The excretion of AIC and AIC-riboside was more than 20 times higher in the patient with the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. The excretion of adenine and adenosine was considerably lower in the patient.
