To the Editor: From the study design and from the lack of comment in the Methods section, it appears that individual informed consent was not obtained from participants in the study of Leveno et al. (Sept. 4 issue).1 Freedom to choose to participate or not to participate in a given experiment is commonly considered a fundamental right that is usually waived only when there is negligible risk of injury to the patient (as in retrospective chart reviews or examination of residual tissues).
