Abstract

The Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics attempts to provide 'guidelines that complement the physician's clinical judgment and facilitate the making of well reasoned decisions. Unanswered scientific questions, the complexity of medical practice, new information, and inevitable differences of opinion between experts result in inherent limitations' in this process. As we did with the first-generation Haemophilus type b polysaccharide vaccine, we will carefully assess and review the performance of these second-generation conjugate vaccines and issue guidelines as we believe they are indicated.
