Locomotor activity induced by phencyclidine was studied in combination with a number of cholinergic-acting drugs (atropine, methyl atropine and physostigmine). Atropine, but not the methyl form. potentiated the phencyclidne-induced activity. Physostigmine blocked the phencyclidine-induced activity at all dosages studied. These findings support the involvement of cholinergic receptors in the effects of phencyclidine and address several clinical pharmacology considerations in the treatment of phencyclidine toxicity.
