Abstract

The metabolic syndrome is a particular constellation of cardiovascular risk factors that is becoming increasingly common in the United States. This risk pattern is commonly associated with obesity and physical inactivity. A portion of patients with the metabolic syndrome progress to type 2 diabetes. Genetic susceptibility appears to play a major role in the expression of the metabolic syndrome. Primary therapy is therapeutic lifestyle changes, i.e., weight reduction and increased physical activity. However, in some patients, the risk factors of the metabolic syndrome may become targets of drug therapy. Drug therapy may be particularly indicated for high-risk patients.
