Abstract
HeLa cells can be induced to undergo morphologic and biosynthetic 'differentiation' by growth in medium with sodium butyrate and certain other inhibitors of DNA synthesis. Modulations of cell phenotype include development desmosomes and tonofilaments and production of several glycopeptide trophic hormones (HCG, FSH, and LH). Mediators of these effects focus the cell population at the G1-S phase transition point.
