Abstract

There are approximately 5 million people in the United States with chronic heart failure (CHF) and nearly 550 000 new cases are diagnosed annually.1 Despite advances in therapeutics since the Framingham study in 1971, 2 the mortality associated with CHF remains quite high, with 5-year survival rates less than 50%.2-4 In addition, the annual expenditure on CHF approaches $38 billion in the United States alone.5.
