Abstract

In 1995 and 1996, photons were measured with the WA98 lead-glass photon detector (LEDA). The invariant direct photon multiplicity as a function of transverse momentum was observed for 208Pb + 208Pb collisions and compared to proton-induced results at similar incident energy. The comparison revealed excess direct photon production in central 208Pb + 208Pb collisions beyond that expected from proton-induced reactions.

N2 - In 1995 and 1996, photons were measured with the WA98 lead-glass photon detector (LEDA). The invariant direct photon multiplicity as a function of transverse momentum was observed for 208Pb + 208Pb collisions and compared to proton-induced results at similar incident energy. The comparison revealed excess direct photon production in central 208Pb + 208Pb collisions beyond that expected from proton-induced reactions.
