N2 - Prevention of complications related to the ventilatory support can have profound lifelong benefits in this population. The predictors for endotracheal intubation and oxygenation complications were prospectively examined in high-risk neonates. Univariate analyses, mixed-model regression analyses (generalized estimating equation approach), and curve-fit multiple regression analyses were used to identify significant predictors, accounting for the dependencies of multiple births. Data were collected for 369 mothers and 415 neonates, (50 mothers having 96 (23%) multiple babies) in the study. Predictors for intubation include pregnancy-induced hypertension, gestational age, 5-minute Apgar score, and resuscitation. Predictors for oxygenation complication include gestational age and congenital defects (P < .05).
