Abstract
Urinary tract infections (UTI) occur in as many as 5% of females during childhood and adolescence. The physician’s responsibility goes beyond diagnosis and treatment of the infection in those girls; the status of the urinary system must be determined in order to formulate a long term management plan. Chemoprophylaxis, the principal subject of this review, is indicated in those patients with moderate to severe vesicoureteral reflux or with recurrent urinary tract infections with or without associated anomalies of the urinary tract.
