Abstract

EVEN in the best systems currently available for maintaining isolated hearts in vitro, progressive deterioration and death of the organs occur. To provide a convenient means for studying the factors that control long-term survival and function of isolated myocardium a method has recently been developed for maintaining spontaneously-beating hearts from late foetal mice in organ culture1. The technique, which was developed from the general methods for culturing other organs used by Fell and her colleagues2, enables function to be preserved for several days or weeks before death finally occurs1,3,4.
