N2 - Venous thromboembolism is the most common complication after total hip and total knee arthroplasty and is associated with significant morbidity, potential mortality and increased healthcare costs. However, venous thromboembolism is a preventable complication. This brief review discusses the epidemiology and the economic and clinical impact of venous thromboembolism after total hip or total knee arthroplasty. It also focuses on preventive strategies, such as appropriate prophylaxis, adherence to evidence-based guidelines, and the potential effect of newer pharmacologic agents that are in clinical development.
