Abstract

Background: Lipid bilayer composition and asymmetry modulate K+ channel function by unknown mechanisms. Results: Lipid headgroups with exposed hydroxyls on the extracellular facing monolayer stabilize the channel open conformation irrespective of charge. Conclusion: Stabilization is mediated through a change of interfacial water structure. Significance: Lipid bilayer asymmetry and its individual monolayers emerge as crucial determinants of K channel gating.
