Abstract

Determination of ventilatory adequacy is an essential part of perioperative care, from preoperative assessment to postanesthesia care and pain management. The most common cause of anesthesia morbidity and mortality is ventilatory insufficiency and its attendant consequences. From visual inspection of respiratory frequency to integrated spirometry, there are numerous well-accepted techniques for monitoring ventilation. All are based on basic physical and physiologic principles that are essential components of understanding modern technology as it contributes to patient safety.
