Abstract

The histories of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and cachectin have recently converged, with the recognition that they are one and the same molecule. Cachectin/TNF appears to be a major factor in the pathology that accompanies invasion by a foreign organism - the host mounts an exagerated response that is itself debilatory. Here, Bruce Beutler and Anthony Cerami review the involvement of cachectin/TNF in wasting and shock, as well as its more beneficial influences.
